Travel guide: Paralimni

Paralimni is a main holiday area of the Famagusta region: a town centre around Agios Georgios Square, the beach resorts of Pernera and Kapparis, and, further west, the farming villages of the Kokkinochoria. A good deal of it costs nothing: all beaches in Cyprus are public and free of charge, including Pernera, Agia Triada and Kapparis, the municipality has a dog beach with its own rules, and the square and the village centres of Avgorou, Liopetri and Frenaros are places you simply walk through. Only extras such as sunbeds and umbrellas are charged.

Best time to visit

For swimming, plan on June to November: Visit Cyprus gives the open sea as above 22 °C in those months, rising to 27 °C in August, and from January to March it averages 16 to 17 °C. Lifeguards at Pernera, Agia Triada and Kapparis are stationed from April to October, so outside those months swim with extra care. April and May are described as an excellent season for nature, with green countryside and flowers in bloom, though nights can be slightly chilly. Summer means high temperatures and cloudless skies, with a sea breeze on the coast. September and October still suit swimming and sunbathing, and the evenings in October turn cool. Winters are mild with rain, and it may rain occasionally in December and January.

Getting to Paralimni

Cyprus has no trains, so the choice is a hire car, a taxi or a bus. Visit Cyprus names Larnaka (LCA) and Pafos (PFO) as the two international airports and lists airport transfer buses between the towns and both airports, plus interurban buses between the major towns; for timetables it points you to the operating companies. For Paralimni, OSEA, the Famagusta District Transportation Organization, lists routes 711, 712 and 714 that link Paralimni with Larnaca, so check the current times before you travel. Town taxis run around the clock and must use a meter. Traffic keeps to the left-hand side of the road, and the municipality’s guide says the signs are written in Greek and English.

Getting around

OSEA runs the local buses. Route 301 is the Paralimni circle line, and its central bus station is at Agiou Georgiou Square, the square of our free stop. Routes 101 and 102 connect Paralimni with Pernera, Protaras, Konnos and Cape Greco as far as the Ayia Napa waterpark, and routes 510/11 and 510/12 link Saint George Square in Paralimni with Kapparis, which the municipality’s guide places 8 km from Protaras. Inland, route 702 links Avgorou and Frenaros with Paralimni, route 701 A links Liopetri with Paralimni, and route 705 links Avgorou and Liopetri with Ayia Napa; route 501 also serves Frenaros and Liopetri on its way to Ayia Napa and Saint George Square. On public holidays the buses run to the Saturday, Sunday and public-holiday schedule. The timetables online in mid-October 2026 are valid until 31 October 2026, so make sure yours is still valid, and OSEA’s website shows live arrivals for each stop.

With children

The municipality’s guide calls Pernera an ideal beach for families with small children because of its serene, shallow water, and describes the water at Agia Triada as calm and shallow near the shore. Kapparis also suits families who want a quiet bay, but the same guide warns of a sudden deep spot as you step into the sea, so go in carefully. Lifeguards are stationed at all three beaches from April to October, and toilets and changing rooms are on the sand. The municipality lists wheelchair access at Pernera and Agia Triada, and Visit Cyprus says Pernera offers disabled access. If you travel with a dog, the municipality has designated one beach in the Kapparis area for dogs, with rules about leashes, registration and vaccination.

When it rains or the sun is too strong

Most free places here are outdoors. Visit Cyprus calls winters mild with rain, and says it may rain occasionally in December and January, so a wet day calls for a change of plan. A walk through the town centre works in any season: the municipality’s archaeological guide describes a smooth 1 km route along a paved road, ending at Agios Georgios Square, and the municipal guide points to the town’s shopping centre, the largest in the area. The churches on the square, the Ayia Anna museum and the Paralimni Municipal National History Museum are separate sights and are not on our free list. On hot days the coast is the cooler place, because Visit Cyprus notes a sea breeze in the coastal areas.

Nearby: Protaras, Cape Greco and the red soil villages

Visit Cyprus counts the resort of Protaras as a subdistrict of Paralimni, and the coast with Fig Tree Bay, Konnos and Louma has its own guide here. The Cape Gkreko national forest park lies southeast of Protaras, with coves, caves, rare flora and fauna, and our Ayia Napa guide covers Cape Greco and Nissi Beach. West of Paralimni, Avgorou, Liopetri and Frenaros belong to the Kokkinochoria, the red soil villages; Avgorou and Liopetri lie in the Municipality of Ayia Napa and Frenaros in Paralimni-Deryneia. The region is known for potatoes grown in red soil. Visit Cyprus says visitors are welcome at the feast-day festivities in Avgorou on 29 June and 6 October and in Frenaros on 6 September, and Liopetri celebrates on 15 August. Avgorou’s Potato Festival and Frenaros’s Watermelon Festival fit the calendar too; check the dates locally. Next to Liopetri, Potamos tou Liopetriou has a fishing shelter that Visit Cyprus lists among the island’s fishing shelters, where at many shelters visitors can stroll with a sea view or watch the fishermen at work.
