Travel guide: Protaras

Protaras is a coastal resort in the Free District of Famagusta, in the east of Cyprus, and part of the municipality of Paralimni-Deryneia. It has sandy bays, a coastal promenade and a nature trail to the Cyclops Cave, and plenty of it costs nothing: all beaches in Cyprus are public and free of charge, you can walk the promenade, and the nature trails in Cape Greco National Forest Park are free for public use. Only extras such as sunbeds and umbrellas at the organised beaches are charged.

Best time to visit

For swimming, plan on June to November: Visit Cyprus gives the open sea as above 22 °C in those months, rising to 27 °C in August, and 16 to 17 °C on average from January to March. Lifeguards are stationed at the beaches in this guide from April to October, so outside those months swim with extra care. April and May are described as an excellent season for nature, with green countryside and flowers in bloom, though nights can be slightly chilly, and Visit Cyprus calls March an excellent period for long country walks. That suits the trails, which cross mostly shrubby vegetation with little shade. Summer means high temperatures and cloudless skies, softened by a sea breeze along the coast. In September and October, Visit Cyprus says, swimming and sunbathing are still at their best. The municipality markets the area as the Sunrise Coast of Europe and recommends watching the sunrise from the promenade, so an early start pays off in any season.

Getting to Protaras

Visit Cyprus describes Larnaka International Airport as well connected with most European cities. Cyprus has no trains, so the choice is a hire car, a taxi or a bus. Visit Cyprus lists airport transfer buses, including a route between the Famagusta district and Larnaka Airport, and interurban routes from Larnaka and from Nicosia to Protaras and Paralimni. For timetables it points you to the operating companies and advises confirming times and prices before you travel. Town taxis run around the clock and must use a meter. Major hire firms have offices at the airport, and a four-lane motorway links the capital with the coastal towns, including Ayia Napa. If you drive, traffic keeps to the left-hand side of the road.

Getting around

The coastal promenade, which the municipality describes as running from the Ayios Nicolaos chapel in the Pernera area to the small Vali tou Hadjixeni beach, lets you cover a good part of the coast on foot. Konnos Bay lies on the road between Cape Greco and Protaras, and the municipality’s guide advises arriving early at weekends to find a parking spot. OSEA, the Famagusta District Transportation Organization, runs routes 101 and 102 between Ayia Napa Waterpark and Paralimni via Cape Greco, Konnos, Protaras and Pernera, and its website shows live arrivals for each stop. Each published timetable has validity dates; the timetables online in mid-October 2026 are valid until 31 October 2026, so make sure yours is still valid when you travel. The municipality adds that public buses with frequent routes cover the major avenues and streets. The Prophet Elias to Konnoi trail ends in a different place from where it starts, so plan your way back.

With children

Visit Cyprus calls Konnos Bay an ideal swimming spot for children and adults, and lifeguards are stationed at the beaches in this guide from April to October. The municipality describes Fig Tree Bay as popular with families, and says that at Vrysi the seabed is sandy and the water stays shallow for several metres. The promenade has benches and a playground. Toilets and changing rooms are on the beaches. Small boats pass through Konnos Bay, so keep an eye on young swimmers, and on the coast trails stay close to children, because the route follows a rugged shore. A Seatrac at Vrysi C and at Louma gives wheelchair users and others with limited mobility independent access to the sea, and floating wheelchairs are listed at Fig Tree Bay, Vrysi A, B and C and Louma. They are free for the public; ask the lifeguards.

Hot middays and wet days

Everything in this guide is outdoors, so heat or rain calls for a change of plan. Visit Cyprus describes summer as a season of high temperatures with cloudless skies, so take the trails early, carry water, which is not available on the Cyclops Cave route, and spend the middle of the day in the sea or in the shade. The municipality recommends the promenade at Vrysi for walks or cycling in the early morning and at sunset. Winters are mild: Visit Cyprus says it may rain occasionally in December and January, and that outdoor activities and excursions can still be enjoyed. From January to March the sea averages 16 to 17 °C, and for December and January Visit Cyprus advises winter clothing, though heavy coats are not required.

Nearby: Cape Greco, Pernera and Paralimni

Cape Greco National Forest Park lies about 2 km from Protaras, and Konnos Bay sits between the two. The Konnoi to Agioi Anargyroi trail, the Sea Caves and the viewpoint belong to our Ayia Napa guide. To the north, Louma lies in the Pernera area. The municipality says the promenade is still being extended and is to run from Konnos Bay towards Kapparis; Pernera, Kapparis and the town of Paralimni with the villages inland are in our Paralimni guide. Bus routes 101 and 102 connect Protaras with Pernera and Paralimni one way and with Konnos, Cape Greco and Ayia Napa the other, so check the last bus back on a timetable that is still valid.
